T

he best accessories have a disproportionate effect on how an outfit reads. A simple combination of jeans and a T-shirt becomes something intentional the moment you add the right belt, bag, watch or sunglasses. Accessories are the fastest route to a considered wardrobe without rebuilding it from scratch.

A Quality Leather Belt

A well-made leather belt is one of the most underestimated accessories in a wardrobe. It defines the waist, completes tailored looks and signals attention to detail. Choose full-grain leather, a simple and understated buckle (no logos), and a colour that anchors your palette. A warm tan works broadly for casual looks; a rich chocolate or black for more formal contexts.

Simple Gold or Silver Jewellery

Jewellery done with restraint is consistently more effective than jewellery worn as a statement. A single, simple chain necklace — fine gold or silver, 40–45cm — adds warmth and finish to a neckline without competing with the outfit. Stud earrings or a single small hoop are similarly versatile. The principle: one or two pieces, simply executed.

A Watch Worth Wearing

A simple, well-designed watch elevates the wrist without effort. It doesn't need to be expensive — Danish brands like Skagen, Larsson & Jennings or the ever-reliable Tissot offer excellent quality at accessible prices. Choose a case that's proportionate to your wrist (36–38mm for most people), a simple dial and a leather or metal strap in a neutral tone.

The Right Sunglasses

Sunglasses add more to a casual daytime look than almost any other accessory. The challenge is finding frames that suit your face shape: oval and round faces suit geometric frames; square and angular faces suit rounder frames. Classic styles — simple oval, rectangular, classic wayfarer — have the longest life.

Quality lenses matter: polarised lenses reduce glare and are worth the premium for anyone spending time outdoors. Acetate frames hold their shape and feel better than plastic alternatives.

A Scarf (Used Well)

A quality scarf in a neutral or complementary tone is one of the most versatile accessories across seasons. In cashmere, silk or wool it adds warmth, colour and texture to otherwise flat outfits. Loop it loosely over a coat, knot it at the neck, or tie it to a bag handle. The key: choose a pattern or colour that works within your palette and learn two or three ways to tie it.

A Structured Bag

The bag is simultaneously a practical tool and the most visible accessory you carry. A structured, quality leather bag — tote, shoulder bag, crossbody or backpack — in a neutral colour elevates any outfit. Avoid obvious branding; a bag should complement the look rather than announce itself. One quality bag is worth significantly more to a wardrobe than several mediocre ones.

Quality Socks (Taken Seriously)

Socks are the detail that separates the careful dresser from the inattentive one. Sheer or fine-ribbed cotton socks with loafers and tailored trousers; no-show socks with trainers and cropped trousers; patterned socks as a deliberate accent point. Wool and fine cotton hold their shape and feel better than synthetic blends.

The Verdict

You don't need many accessories to dress well. A good belt, one or two pieces of simple jewellery, the right sunglasses, and a quality bag will do the majority of the work for most wardrobes. Buy fewer, better and use them consistently.
